LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) 3D printers, also known as masked stereolithography (MSLA) or masked SLA (MSLA) printers, use a liquid resin cured by an LCD screen to create 3D objects. Here's an overview of how LCD 3D printers work:

LCD 3D printers use a vat of liquid photopolymer resin, similar to other resin-based 3D printing technologies.

Instead of a digital light projector (DLP), LCD 3D printers have an LCD screen at the bottom of the resin vat. The LCD screen contains a grid of pixels that corresponds to the resolution of the final print.

Layer by Layer Building:

The 3D printing process begins by lowering the build platform into the resin vat, just above the LCD screen. The LCD screen displays a cross-section of the object to be printed, allowing UV light to pass through specific pixels and cure the resin in the desired pattern for that layer.

Curing the Resin:

The UV light emitted by the LCD screen selectively cures the liquid resin, solidifying it into the shape of the current layer. The cured layer adheres to the build platform.

After each layer is cured, the build platform is lifted slightly, and a new layer of liquid resin is spread over the cured layer by a recoating mechanism. The process repeats, with the LCD screen displaying the next layer's cross-section, until the entire object is printed.


Once the printing is complete, the object is typically removed from the resin vat. Depending on the specific printer and resin used, additional post-processing steps such as cleaning and curing may be required.

The resolution of the LCD screen, measured in pixels per inch (PPI), determines the level of detail that can be achieved in the printed object.

Different LCD 3D printers may be compatible with specific types of resins. It's important to use resins recommended by the printer manufacturer for optimal results.
